Beyond One Family

Pastor Craig Babcock

In Genesis 26, we discover how God blesses nations through His faithful servants even in the midst of tremendous hardship. We encounter Isaac facing a devastating famine, yet God commands him not to flee to Egypt—the easy solution—but to stay in the land He has chosen. This speaks directly to our own lives: when hardship strikes, our instinct is to run to what feels safe, to return to the world's solutions rather than trust God's calling. Isaac's journey reveals that God's blessings often come through our obedience in difficult seasons, not despite them. As we watch Isaac dig wells that his enemies repeatedly fill in, we see a beautiful picture of perseverance and grace. Each well represents ministry, witness, and the spreading of God's blessing to hostile neighbors. The Philistines envy him, quarrel with him, and drive him away—yet Isaac responds not with vengeance but with continued faithfulness. When his enemies finally return seeking peace, Isaac chooses to feast with them rather than rehearse their wrongs. This mirrors our calling as the church: to bless those who curse us, to continue the work even when opposed, and to trust that God is using our faithfulness to reach the very people who resist us. The wells Isaac dug blessed the nations around him, just as our faithful witness blesses our communities, cities, and world.
