The Men Were Afraid

Genesis 43 takes us deep into the heart of fear and faith, using the vivid imagery of trees planted by streams of water. Just as those green trees stand resilient in the Colorado plains during drought, we too can develop deep spiritual roots through trust in God and meditation on His Word. The narrative follows Jacob and his sons as they grapple with severe famine and the terrifying prospect of returning to Egypt, where an unknown official holds their fate in his hands. What makes this passage so compelling is how it exposes six ways that trepidation infiltrates our lives: it comes easily when life gets hard, it causes us to cast blame, it brings up guilt even from our distant past, and most tragically, it blinds us to God's active presence. The brothers stand before Joseph, their own brother, yet cannot see the grace and provision right in front of them because fear has clouded their vision. This story reminds us that God often brings us to places of desperation not to harm us, but to draw us back to Himself. Even when our faith is half-hearted and reluctant, even when we turn to God only as a last resort, He remains gracious and continues to work on our behalf. The challenge for us is to recognize that anxiety about tomorrow robs us of the peace Christ offers today, and that true peace comes through immersing ourselves in God's Word and remembering His faithfulness.
